Keep Big Sampson Cay Safe for All

Yntegra/Rosewood Hotel’s Plans Pose Safety Risks for Guests, Residents, Employees

Yntegra/Rosewood Hotel’s plans call for the unnecessary dredging of fragile coral reefs, seagrass meadows and sandbars in the North Bay. They also would direct commercial service vessels through recreational waters used by kayakers, snorkelers and divers, creating an ongoing hazard for workers and guests.

The Yntegra project will generate an estimated one and a half tons of solid waste per day. The supply ships will bring in deliveries and haul away garbage directly in front of two recreational swimming areas frequented by tourists—creating a truly unsafe environment for anyone in the Exuma community seeking to explore this underwater treasure. The entry to the concrete, dredged-out service dock is cross-current to strong tidal flow (2-3 knots), raising concerns for low-draft service vessels and crews.

On the south side of the development, the project’s planned dredged-out marinas have east-facing entrances, which face the open sea exposed to significant wind and tidal action during weather events. This presents a hazard for guests and staff. If you don’t understand the waters, you shouldn’t be trying to change them.

Hazardous Design

  • Marinas Exposed to Open Sea

The proposed marina entrance faces east on a barrier island, exposed to wind and tidal action from the open sea, creating a truly hazardous situation for boats and staff.

  • Barrier Island Residences Exposed to Elements

Barrier island wind and sea forces will batter proposed residences located on a cliff that is regularly overcome with waves during even minor weather events.

  • Significant Dredging of Recreational Sandbars to Allow Access

The location of the north bay supply dock and residencies proposed for the west side of the island can not be accessed by water without the dredging of significant channels through seabed impacting seagrass meadows, coral reefs and recreational sandbars.
